Recuperación de imágenes con el atributo "alt"

Desconocía el tema, pero daba por hecho que Google y otros buscadores tenían en cuenta el atributo "alt" que proporciona una descripción breve de la imagen, en la recuperación de éstas, tanto si la imagen se encuentra dentro de un contexto como si no.

Pero según Google Blogoscoped en Google Searching Alt-textparece ser que no, y esta información hace poco que se está teniendo en cuenta:

I’m not sure for how long, but Google web search is searching alt-text within unlinked images. Alt-attributes are serving as textual replacement within contexts where there are no images (it is not to be confused with the title-attribute, which serves as an image’s title, e.g. “Painting by Van Gogh”). Indexing this alt-text of course makes complete sense, but from what I often heard Google in the past would only search alt-text when the image is within a link.

Otra razón, además de la importancia desde el punto de vista de la accesibilidad, para hacer uso del "ALT".
